“MAGIC VOLCANO LAVA RECIPE”

A classic, fun & easy SCIENCE PROJECT for kids of all ages!! The volcano you build around the hidden bottle can be made from a wide range of materials such as clay, paper mache, dried dough (made with flour, water, salt & oil), and more!!

Be creative, be safe, and have fun!!!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 12 oz. glass or plastic bottle
  • 2 Tbsp. of baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp. of dish soap
  • 3 drops of food coloring
  • 2 oz. of vinegar

BEFORE YOU START:

  • This lava recipe can make a big mess, when it erupts. Be sure to set your volcano up outside, or on a large cookie sheet (or such), somewhere easy to clean up.
  • Be sure to wear protective eyewear or stand at a safe distance. Ingredients can sting a bit if it gets in your eyes.
  • If you get lava mix in your eye, gently wash your eyes with soap & water. Rinse and flush with water until the stinging stops. Dry with clean towel.
  • If you get real lava in your eye, soapy water is of no use to you.
  • In case of Lava Monster attack, avoid touching the floor.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Using a funnel, pour 2 Tsp. of baking soda into a dry 8 or 12 oz. bottle.
  2. in a separate cup or pitcher, mix together
    1. 2 oz. of vinegar
    2. 1 Tbsp. of dish soap
    3. 3 drops of food coloring
  3. pour your vinegar mixture into the bottle, and…
  4. Look out for the ERUPTION!!!

HOW IT WORKS

When BAKING SODA (sodium bicarbonate) is mixed with VINEGAR (dilute acetic acid), the chemical reaction that occurs produces 1.) carbon dioxide gas, 2.) liquid water, 3.) sodium ions, and 4.) acetate ions.

  • The CO2 produced is what causes the bubbling reaction.

  • The dish soap captures the escaping carbon dioxide gas, and makes for foamier lava.
  • Add wild, vibrant colors to your lava, by adding a few drops of the food coloring of your choice.

Experiment with different amounts of each ingredient, and observe the effects between the eruptions!!

Examples: Does adding more dish soap produce thicker lava? How does adding warm water effect the eruption?? What about adding multiple colors of food coloring??? Painting the volcano, and adding little trees and dinosaurs around it????

That’s it! It’s that simple!! Amaze your friends & family!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!
